Candida is one of the most misunderstood yet widespread contributors to chronic ill health. It’s often overlooked. Or it’s treated superficially. But when addressed thoroughly - through precise testing, diet, lifestyle, herbs and natural medicines, it can be healed.
At Apothēca by Anthia, we approach Candida with depth and rigour. We consider the entire terrain in which it thrives - not just the yeast itself.
Candida is a genus of yeasts that naturally live within the human microbiome - particularly in the gut, mouth, vaginal tract, and skin. Candida albicans is the most well-known and commonly associated with overgrowth.
In balance, Candida poses no threat. But under the right conditions, when the immune system is compromised, gut flora is imbalanced, or hormones fluctuate - Candida can shift from a benign organism to an invasive pathogen.
Candida is a type of yeast, which is part of the fungal kingdom. While moulds, fungi, and yeasts all fall under the same biological classification, not all fungi behave the same way in the human body. Candida, unlike environmental moulds, is an endogenous yeast - meaning it’s part of us. It becomes pathogenic only under the right internal conditions.
Candida overgrowth has been linked to a range of chronic conditions, including:
Digestive disorders: bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhoea, IBS-like symptoms
Recurrent yeast infections: vaginal thrush, oral thrush, skin rashes
Leaky gut syndrome: increased intestinal permeability
Histamine intolerance and food sensitivities
Hormonal imbalances: PMS, perimenopause symptoms, oestrogen dominance
Mood disorders: anxiety, depression, irritability
Fatigue and brain fog
Autoimmune conditions : due to chronic immune activation
Eczema, acne, and chronic skin issues
Frequent urinary tract or sinus infections
Candida often coexists with other conditions such as SIBO, histamine intolerance, oxalate sensitivity, and mast cell activation. Rather than isolate Candida, we work to understand its interplay with other imbalances across the gut, immune, and endocrine systems.
Symptoms vary based on location and severity, but may include:
White coating on the tongue or mouth
Persistent bloating or flatulence
Itchy ears, skin, or genital areas
Vaginal discharge, itching, or burning
Urinary tract infections
Cravings for sugar or refined carbohydrates
Chronic fatigue and poor memory
Headaches or migraines
Muscle and joint pain
Brain fog and difficulty concentrating
Irritability, anxiety, or low mood
Sensitivity to strong smells or chemicals
We look beyond the symptoms to understand what has allowed Candida to flourish. Common contributing factors include:
Repeated or prolonged antibiotic use
High sugar and refined carbohydrate intake
Oral contraceptive use or hormonal fluctuations
Chronic stress and adrenal dysregulation
Use of steroids or immune-suppressing medication
Poor sleep and circadian rhythm disruption
Mold exposure or toxic environmental load
Heavy metal toxicity
Alcohol overuse
Gut dysbiosis (bacterial imbalance or low diversity)
Multiple pregnancies with poor microbiome recovery
Underlying immune dysfunction or chronic illness
In naturopathy, we see Candida not as an enemy to kill, but as a signal. The internal terrain - your gut environment, immune function, hormones, and stress response determines whether Candida thrives or stays in check. True healing involves transforming the terrain so that Candida no longer has a reason or opportunity to proliferate.
Many people assume they have Candida. Others are told they do based on symptoms alone. But true healing requires clarity and we don’t guess.
We use a combination of functional pathology testing to get a clear picture of what’s really going on:
Comprehensive Stool Analysis: detects yeast, bacterial overgrowth, parasites, inflammatory markers, and microbiome balance
Vaginal Microbiome Swabs: for recurring thrush, itching, discharge, or genitourinary symptoms
SIBO Breath Testing: to assess small intestinal bacterial overgrowth that may mimic or coexist with Candida
Blood Testing: where relevant, to assess immune response, inflammation, nutrient deficiencies, or mycotoxin exposure
Urine Mycotoxin Testing or Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis: to identify deeper toxic load, including environmental mould and heavy metals
No two Candida cases are the same. That’s why we create tailored protocols that may include:
A personalised plan to starve Candida, remove trigger foods, support liver detoxification, and reduce inflammation. This includes avoiding refined sugars, yeast, mould-prone foods, processed carbohydrates, alcohol, and problematic fermented foods. We also address any co-existing food intolerances, histamine issues, or blood sugar instability.
We prescribe powerful, clinically-effective natural medicines based on your test results, symptoms, and constitution. These may include:
Specific Herbal Antifungals : Garlic, oregano oil, horopito, caprylic acid, pau d’Arco, berberine, black walnut, and others depending on tolerance and co-existing conditions. These herbs help inhibit fungal growth and restore microbial balance.
Biofilm Disruptors : Candida and other pathogens can create protective biofilms that reduce the effectiveness of treatment. We incorporate agents like NAC, enzymes (e.g. serrapeptase), and specific herbal extracts to break down these biofilms and allow antifungals to work more effectively.
Binders : To support detoxification during yeast die-off, we may use natural binders such as Immunolin, Enterosgel and fibres. These help bind to and safely escort toxins out of the body via the gut, reducing the burden on the liver and minimising Herxheimer reactions.
Specific Prebiotics & Probiotic Strains : Not all probiotics are helpful in Candida cases. We use strain-specific probiotics like Saccharomyces boulardii, Lactobacillus plantarum, and Bifidobacterium lactis, along with carefully chosen prebiotics to avoid feeding harmful yeast while nourishing beneficial microbes.
Gut-Repairing Nutrients : We address intestinal permeability (leaky gut) and inflammation with therapeutic nutrients like glutamine, zinc carnosine, slippery elm, and marshmallow root. These ingredients support mucosal healing, reduce immune reactivity, and restore gut lining integrity.
Digestive, Absorptive & Elimination Herbal Support : Bitter herbs, digestive enzymes, and bile stimulants are used to enhance stomach acid, enzyme output, and bile flow—critical for breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating toxins. This phase also supports liver detoxification pathways essential during antifungal treatment.
It’s important to remember that the form, absorption rate, and quality can vary significantly between brands and types. Consulting with a qualified professional ensures that you’re selecting the most absorbable and highest quality supplements for your individual needs. We assess your constitution, sensitivities, age, gender, medical conditions, and potential drug interactions when prescribing.
Candida is both a cause and a consequence of dysregulation. We support the gut-brain axis through calming therapies, adaptogens, sleep optimisation, and addressing underlying stress or trauma patterns.
Candida cannot be addressed without supporting the beneficial flora that keep it in check. Based on your stool test, we prescribe targeted probiotic strains, prebiotics, and dietary strategies to reseed a resilient microbiome.
We investigate and reduce toxic exposures; be they from food, personal care, household products, or chronic mould. We support the liver and lymphatic system to clear byproducts of yeast die-off and environmental toxins.
As Candida dies off, it releases toxic byproducts such as acetaldehyde and ethanol. This can temporarily worsen symptoms; headaches, fatigue, brain fog, irritability, or skin breakouts. That’s why detox pathways must be supported before and during treatment.
Emerging research links Candida to cognitive dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and even psychiatric medication resistance. The mechanism? Gut dysbiosis, leaky gut, chronic inflammation, and disrupted neurotransmitter synthesis.
At Apothēca, we treat the whole person, supporting your microbiome, nervous system, and emotional wellbeing in tandem.
For women, the vaginal microbiome is an essential site of Candida colonisation. Imbalances in Lactobacillus species, use of lubricants, antibiotics, oral contraceptives, or poor gut health can all contribute to chronic thrush. We test and restore balance to this sensitive ecosystem through targeted prebiotics, herbs, and lifestyle support.
To help patients understand the process, we work in five key phases:
Identification & Testing
Trigger Removal (diet, antibiotics, alcohol, etc.)
Antifungal Treatment + Liver & Detox Support
Microbiome Restoration
Nervous System Support + Lifestyle Maintenance
