What Mysteries and Miracles Teach Us About Healing

When someone receives a diagnosis, it’s natural they have questions. “How long will this take?” “Why is this happening to me?” “Will I fully recover?”

Each of these queries is a natural response to something that can feel beyond our control. But the funny thing about healing is sometimes we just don’t know. Sometimes we need to sit in the uncertainty, in the knowledge that there are both mysteries and miracles.

In this episode, we discuss that uncertainty, looking at:

● Why allowing yourself to live within the question rather than demanding immediate answers can open pathways to healing.

● Ways to recognise extraordinary recoveries not as exceptions, but as realities that medicine has yet to fully understand.

● How the healing journey often requires releasing fixed expectations and embracing a flexible mindset.

Understanding Uncertainty

In the consulting room, uncertainty surfaces swiftly alongside diagnosis, prompting a raft of questions. Often these are natural inquiries that seek solidity amidst the shifting sands of illness. Yet, when answers remain elusive, fear can proliferate.

Many people find uncertainty more daunting than the illness itself. It is a pervasive wound. And sometimes this need for knowing obstructs healing at the soul level. In our pursuit of certainty, we may overlook the healing potential of mystery.

Miracles: Rethinking the Impossible

While miracles might seem relegated to the realm of the devout, they are documented realities. They expand our understanding of what’s possible beyond the confines of prognosis. They present a reality that exists without the boundaries set by our current medical understanding.

Miracles might emerge as spontaneous remissions, unexplained recoveries, or simply as the body choosing to defy the odds. These instances teach us that maybe the greatest certainty of all is the presence of the unknown.

The Interplay of Mystery and Certainty

Medicine and science are rooted in the promise of certainty. Diagnoses and prognoses create a framework for understanding illness. Yet, thinkers like Richard Feynman and Marcello Gleiser highlight a crucial aspect of knowledge: the more we know, the more we realise remains unknown. Mystery coexists with knowing, forming the cutting edge of healing.

Staying open to mystery doesn't equate to hope laden with empty promises. It's about recognising that each body is unique and cannot be fully governed by statistical probabilities. Acknowledging this can lead to a better quality of life and sometimes, improved clinical outcomes.

The Power of Belief and Presence

The placebo effect, often dismissed or misunderstood, demonstrates that belief can prompt genuine healing responses in the body. This isn’t merely a psychological trick. It’s a powerful, documented interaction where the quality of care activates the body’s innate healing capabilities.

By nurturing openness and maintaining a presence, the healing process is enhanced. Every tradition recognises the healing power of attention where genuine presence becomes therapeutic, filling gaps in our understanding with its profound simplicity.

Living the Questions

Renowned poet Rainer Maria Rilke once advised to 'live the questions.. In the context of healing, it means resisting the urge to prematurely seal off the mystery with tidy conclusions. Instead, it invites a more patient and attentive inhabiting of the unknowns.

The hardest work often lies not in the treatment itself, but in enduring the liminal space of not-yet-resolved health and trusting in a timeline beyond our control.

Embracing Healing's Journey

Healing involves expansion…of the mind, the spirit, and even the boundaries of medical certainty. As you journey through healing, ask yourself:

● Where do I demand certainty in my healing process?

● What might change if I held uncertainty more lightly?

● Have I experienced unexplained shifts in my healing?

Let these questions open you to the spaciousness where healing can occur in unexpected ways. Healing is a journey, and it calls us to embrace both mystery and miracles.
