Menarche, menstruation, perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause are significant stages in a woman’s life. They can bring profound physical and emotional changes, and for some women, symptoms that genuinely affect their health and quality of life.
But when did these natural physiological transitions themselves become something to diagnose, fear or fix?
In this episode of This Is How We Heal, we explore the female body across a lifetime and the delicate balance between taking women’s symptoms seriously and turning normal stages of life into medical conditions.
We discuss:
The natural transitions of the female body that are often misinterpreted as medical conditions.
How societal narratives can either support or hinder understanding and acceptance.
The value of education and preparedness through each stage.
Let's start with menarche, the first menstrual period, marking an important milestone in puberty. This transition signifies the maturation of the reproductive system, and yet, we often surround it with secrecy or embarrassment.
It's crucial to foster an environment where girls are educated about their bodies, understand the normalcy of the menstrual cycle, and what it reveals about their health. Imagine if menarche were greeted not with confusion but with celebration and knowledge.
Following menarche, we enter into the fertility years, a period that extends over decades. The conversation often narrows to fertility alone, yet the menstrual cycle is impactful, irrespective of a woman’s desire to conceive.
Diverse experiences such as endometriosis or fibroids acknowledge that reproduction is just one facet of womanhood. It’s essential that we recognise the variability in each woman’s reproductive journey, broadening the narrative beyond childbearing.
Perimenopause catches many women off-guard, as it can begin even when menstruation is still regular. It comes with a multitude of symptoms that might feel unfamiliar and uncomfortable.
Educating women about this stage, long before they experience it, can dismantle unnecessary fear. Awareness equips women to differentiate between physiological changes and medical conditions requiring treatment, thereby reducing unwarranted anxiety about menopause.
Post-menopause is a stage that’s often mischaracterised as a period of decline, but it can actually signify a new phase of life. Older women have, historically, held influential roles as advisors and healers.
Menopause can bring freedom from cycles, offering opportunities to redefine personal identity and priorities. By nurturing older women as knowledge keepers and embracing aging as a source of experience, we reshape the narrative around post-menopausal life.
When do life stages warrant medical intervention? While it’s crucial to address serious symptoms, not every change in the female body should be medicalised.
Heavy bleeding shouldn’t be dismissed as perimenopause, nor should persistent depression be solely attributed to hormones. Women should have access to both medical treatment and holistic care, tailored to their unique stories, to navigate each stage healthily.
While hormones and medical options can be vital, it’s important to also consider nutrition, movement, mental health, and individual circumstances.
Menopause is a time for self-reflection, where women might focus on rejuvenating their bodies with nourishment and rest, or perhaps redefining what they value most in life.
Recognising these life stages as rites of passage elevates them beyond medical diagnoses.
Menarche, menstruation, perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause each represent a facet of the lifelong female experience deserving respect and understanding.
Let’s prepare women for these transitions with open conversations and comprehensive care rather than casting them aside as medical issues.
