Have We Designed Healing Out of Healthcare?

Modern hospitals are marvels of medical advancement, but within the clinical hustle and bustle, the human experience can sometimes feel secondary. So what can we do to bridge the gap between places of medicine and spaces that promote healing?

In this discussion, we explore:

  • The importance of the treatment environment in patient healing.

  • How historical healing practices can inform modern healthcare design.

  • Practical steps towards creating more nurturing healthcare spaces.

The Modern Hospital Experience

Despite their essential function, hospitals can feel intimidating. They must accommodate emergencies, cater to complex surgeries, and host comprehensive treatments like intensive care and diagnostic imaging.

But we must ask ourselves: how can we balance the need for medical technology with the necessity of a supportive healing environment?

Lessons from the Past

Looking back to ancient practices, healing was about more than just medical treatment; it was holistic. In ancient Greece, healing centres known as Asclepieia combined medicine with the restorative power of nature, community, and spirituality.

Modern science has made great strides since then, but it can still learn from the healing practices that prioritised the environment as part of care.

These sanctuaries were designed to nurture both the body and mind, reminding us that a patient's needs surpass the strictly physiological. Creating calm, beautiful spaces where patients could recover underscores how important surroundings are in promoting healing.

Healing Environment Design

There's increasing interest in what is termed ‘healing environment design’ or ‘evidence-based healthcare design’.

Research shows that factors such as noise reduction, natural lighting, and access to nature can significantly affect patient recovery and well-being.

Why, then, are these often considered mere extras or luxuries? We seem to have separated medical treatment from environmental factors, allowing perceptions of functionality to overshadow the holistic support these factors provide.

Food as Medicine

Perhaps one of the clearest examples of this disconnect is hospital food. Known for its lacklustre quality, hospital meals often leave much to be desired, which is counterintuitive when considering nutrition's role in healing.

Despite logistical challenges, improving the quality and nutritional value of hospital food should be prioritised to support recovery.

Redesigning Recovery Spaces

Imagine a future where hospitals resemble healing centres more than clinical hubs. Spaces intentionally designed with patient well-being in mind - gardens accessible to patients, windows opening where possible, rooms for quiet reflection, and spaces for families to gather - can work alongside cutting-edge medical technology to enhance healing.

We could also envision transitional care facilities providing support after acute treatment, focusing on nutrition education and physical recovery, bridging the gap between hospital discharge and home care.

A Holistic Approach to Healthcare

It's not about choosing between excellent medical care and nurturing environments. It’s about integrating the two. By doing so, we attend not only to the physics of the body but also to the emotional and psychological journey of healing.

In the end, the way forward in healthcare is holistic, thoughtfully crafting spaces that care as much for the human spirit as they do for the human body.
